The aim of this class is to create a low-stakes environment for participants of any experience level to practice the skills and gain confidence in directing, teaching, and coaching improv. The class contains a mix of practice and theory. The majority of the class will involve authentic directing/coaching/teaching activities with reflection and discussion throughout to incorporate theoretical concepts. We will also host experienced guest improv directors, teachers, and coaches, so we can experience a diversity of perspectives and philosophies on the work. We’ll apply the core question of “why this ____ now” to all aspects of our work and use theatrical dramaturgy as our core theme. We’ll also go over the relevant history of directing and improvisation, creating safe and inclusive spaces, planning and running rehearsals, giving and receiving feedback, and collaborating with a production team to put a show together.
